Research Centers Dedicated to St. Joseph

Valladolid and Montreal

The years after World War II saw the founding of two major research centers devoted to the study of Saint Joseph. In 1946, Father José Antonio Carrasco, OCD (1905-2002), founded the Centro Josefino Español at the historic Carmelite monastery of San Benito el Real in Valladolid, Spain. The following year, he launched the scholarly journal, Estudios Josefinos, which publishes two issues annually and continues publication to the present day. Fr. Carrasco also founded the bimonthly magazine, El mensajero de San José, which was aimed at a popular readership, and in 1951 the Ibero-American Society of Josephology. Today the Centro Josefino Español houses a comprehensive library of books and resources of all kinds related to Saint Joseph. Estudios Josefinos is published and edited under the auspices of the Discalced Carmelite Iberian Province of Saint Teresa of Jesus. Here is a link to Fr. Carrasco’s biography on the site of the Royal Academy of History in Madrid.

During this same time period, a similar development also took place at the Oratory of Saint Joseph in Montreal, Canada, where Father Roland Gauthier, CSC (1915-2005), founded the Saint Joseph Research Centre in 1951. Two years later, the scholarly journal, Cahiers de Joséphologie, was launched, with two issues being published annually from 1953 to 1994, when it ceased publication. It was replaced by Cahiers de l’Oratoire Saint-Joseph, which published two issues annually from 1996 until 2002. In 2013, the Centre was renamed “The Roland Gauthier Archives and Documentation Centre,” whose mission is “to gather, conserve, organize and make available documents about Saint Joseph, Saint Brother André, the life of the shrine, as well as several related pastoral and theological issues (such as prayer, suffering, death, etc.).” Further information is available at:
